Fabric shops are a great source for many sewing notions. Since I started machine embroidery, finding various brands and types of thread has “almost” taken over my fabric addiction. The great thing about thread is that it takes up less space than fabric in a suitcase. There is always the option of shipping your purchases home or to a neighbors so that the package is secure until you arrive home.
If you order fabric from online sources, check the location of the stores you use. This information can be found on the site' "About Us" or "Store Locater" area. You may be pleasantly surprised to find the store or a branch of that store where you are going to be. Don't miss the opportunity to visit chain stores in a new area. Not all chain stores are the same size and the often carry different merchandise.
Steps to Tracking Down Fabric Stores
- Before you leave find a zip code for where you are staying. The United States Postal Service has a zip code finder online.
- You can now take that zip code and plug it in on a map site to find surrounding towns. Zooming in and out on the map will allow you to see what towns are local to where you are going to be visiting.
- Now use a phone directory service to search for stores in that area.
Use the Business Type search window to search. Use terms that apply to sewing such as fabric store, sewing machine and quilting. Think as if you were trying to find a listing in the yellow pages of your phone book. - The forum is a great place to reach people from around the world. Post a question about what fabric stores you should visit and get answers from people in that area.
